TJ Maxx is one of the US’ most popular department stores with an annual turnover of over $50 billion dollars.
They are fully stocked with a great selection of apparel, beauty items, and fragrances including from some of the world’s biggest fashion houses such as:
- Moschino
- Givenchy
- Burberry
- Cartier
- Hermes
- Estee Lauder and
- Kenneth Cole
If you’ve recently purchased perfume or Cologne from TJ Maxx but it’s not up to scratch and you want to make a return, then it’s worth getting up to speed with their returns policy.
Like most stores, they have a limited returns window in which to make a return. Miss it and you could be stuck with the product.

What is TJ Maxx’s Fragrance Return Policy? The Short Answer
In short, you can return perfume or Cologne up to 30 days from purchase for an exchange or refund in the original form of payment. This is extended to 40 days for items purchased online.
You can return fragrances for all manner of reasons such as:
- Unwanted gifts
- Wrong orders
- Changed your mind
- Don’t like the product
- If the product is defective
- If the product was ordered by mistake
Can You Return Used Fragrances to TJ Maxx?
On the strict wording of TJ Maxx’s policy, all items returned must be in like new condition. Items that are used, worn, or in an unsellable condition will not be refunded.
However, if you’ve only used a small amount of the bottle, you will probably be ok.
The same goes for defective items. If you find your perfume goes off after a couple of months, we’d still recommend trying to secure a refund.
How to Return Perfume or Cologne to TJ Maxx?
For fragrances purchased in-store, you need to return them to any open TJ Maxx store within 30 days of purchase.
For items purchased online, you will have 40 days from your order date to return them to any of TJ Maxx’s stores.
You can also return fragrances purchased online using the mail-in returns process.
To initiate this, simply use the returns label provided with your receipt and drop it off at the carrier detailed there.
However, please note that for mail-in returns, TJ Maxx charges a $10.99 restocking and return postage fee which will be deducted from your refund unless the item is defective.
Any items received at their warehouse after 40 days from purchase will be refunded in store credit to use in-store.
What is TJ Maxx’s No Receipt Policy on Fragrances?
If you’re unable to provide a receipt or proof of purchase, then TJ Maxx will refund you with store credit to use in-store.
You will also need to provide a government-issued ID, your address, and your signature.
However, you should note that proof of purchase will generally be emailed to you upon purchase if you ordered from TJ Maxx.com.
So check your email!
You can also try bringing along a screenshot or printout of your debit or credit card as proof of purchase.
How Long Will It Take to Get a Refund from TJ Maxx?
If returning by mail, expect to wait between 10-14 working days after they’ve received your return. Therefore expect to wait up to 21 working days in total to allow time for return delivery.
For returns made in-store, you will be refunded there and then but you may not see the refund in your account for a few days depending on your bank provider.
What to Do Outside the 30-Day Window?
TJ Maxx is quite flexible as they will accept returns for online orders that return back to their warehouse after 40 days, albeit you will only be refunded in store credit.
However, this doesn’t appear to apply to items purchased in-store and probably only applies in circumstances where you ordered online, and returned the item by mail but just missed the 40-day returns window.
In other circumstances, we suggest the following:-
- Speak to a manager if the 30/40 day window has just elapsed. They may be able to extend it in certain situations;
- Write to the manufacturer/brand if the fragrance has gone bad within a few months. They may offer a refund/replacement;
- Sell your fragrance on sites such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or online forums.

Final Thoughts
TJ Maxx offers a fairly average 30-day returns policy on fragrances purchased in-store with this extended slightly to 40 days for online orders.
However, they do offer store credit refunds for items returned by mail that just miss out on the 40-day window.
But their policy is let down by the fact that charge a $10.99 restocking and return shipping fee unless the item is defective. This is pretty poor in our view.
