Forget the Gym

The average cost of gym membership in the USA is $50 a month, with many flagship establishments charging a lot more!

The truth is, you don’t need a gym or any fancy equipment to lose weight!

Ever seen “Rocky 4” where Rocky goes up against Ivan Drago, the Russian beast from the east?

Drago has the best and most high tech gym equipment available, whilst Rocky makes do with a few huge logs that he lugs around!

And guess what – Rocky still looks great and he still kicks Drago’s butt!

Whilst it’s only a movie, the same rings true in the real world!

You don’t need to spend a fortune to exercise well and shred the pounds!

When I lost the weight I mentioned above, I did it exercising with YouTube videos by Shaun T. Yup – home exercise vids!

There are thousands of workout videos uploaded to places like YouTube. They are completely free and there’s enough videos to suit any level of fitness or experience.

You don’t even need any specialist equipment as many of the workouts are just pure cardio with no weights!

If you don’t fancy jumping up and down in front of your TV, then why not go for a run or brisk walk instead?

Both running and walking are tried and tested ways to get the blood pumping and fat shifting!

The best part is they’re completely free and can be done with very little specialist equipment or experience!

Eat Out Less

It’s a known fact that eating out generally isn’t the best thing to do if you want to lose weight.

Ever wondered why restaurant food tastes so good?

That’s because a lot of the time the food we eat in restaurants is high in fat and cholesterol and laden with excess salt!

Yes, our taste buds love these things, but regrettably our waistlines do not!

Not only are foods we eat out generally less healthy, but we often end up eating bigger portions and/or splurging on sugar loaded desserts for afters!

Yep – we tend to succumb to temptation and it’s much easier to overeat when we’re eating away from home! This behaviour is not conducive to maintaining a flat stomach!

The best way to combat this is to learn how to cook healthy, great tasting meals at home.

Not only will you improve your culinary skills but you can also keep an eye on what you’re putting into your food!

You’ll also save a ton of cash.

Stick to Water

Pretty simple, uh?

Water is probably the best liquid you can put into your body!

It’s the OG when it comes to re-hydration!

So don’t blow your wad on sugar laden beverages. They’re expensive, calorific and just not very healthy!

Even good ol’ tap water is fine to drink (in most countries) and will provide all the hydration that your body needs to keep you fit and healthy.

The best thing is, it’s super cheap and accessible and is proven to support weight loss by nourishing your cells and eradicating toxins from your body!

Don’t Throw Away Your Fruit and Veg

Did you know the average American family wastes 250 pounds of food each year.

That amounts to a staggering $165 billion of wasted food across the country!

Not only is wasting food expensive, but it can also lead to unhealthy eating habits!

The problem is that a lot family waste is made up of fruit and vegetables because of their short shelf life!

It’s one of my girlfriend’s pet hates when we bring in the groceries from the weekly shop and we end up throwing out last week’s veg that’s gone past its best because we haven’t bothered to eat it!

So, don’t do that!

Take control of your fridge and what’s in it!

Learn to use what you have in your fridge before it goes bad!

Bulk your meals with excess veg/fruit rather than meat so it gets used up!

Not only will you cut down on waste but you’ll feel fuller for longer!

That’s because fruit and veg is packed with fibre which keeps that temptation to snack between meals at bay for much longer than other food items!

If you can’t use up all your veg/fruit, then freeze it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with freezing fruit and veg and the nutrients in the food will be maintained provided you don’t freeze it for too long (usually more than a year)!

Ditch the Meat Once a Week

I am far from being a vegetarian and further still from being a vegan, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like vegetables.

Quite the opposite. I actually love veg, and fruit even more so!

Whilst we eat meat with most meals, my family try to have at least one main meal a week where we ditch the meat completely!

And you know what…. I don’t actually miss it that much!

Better still, ditching the meat saves tons of cash!

Meat is expensive, at least it is where I live (in the UK). Not only that, eating a lot of it can see you piling on the pounds!

The problem with meat, especially red meats, is they’re packed full of fat and cholesterol which are just no good for a slim figure or if you’re trying to shred the flab!

So make a concerted effort to have at least one meal each week where meat is left out! There are lots of awesome, tasty meat free recipes only a few clicks away!

Curries, stews, salads, rice dishes…the list is endless!

Check out Crazy Vegan Kitchen for some awesome meat free meal ideas.

Buy Healthy Foods in Bulk

If you buy in bulk, you’re likely to save money in the long run!

Not only that but if you fill your cupboards with a lot of healthy bulked foods, you’ll be much less likely to opt for the quick convenience foods that are invariably loaded with fat and other naughties!

You need to get into the habit of using simple healthy ingredients that you can use as your main staples!

So look for things like bulk brown rice, bulked oatmeal, big bags of frozen veggies and bulked tinned goods like chick peas and other pulses!

If you can get into the habit of using these healthy ingredients to your advantage, then you’ll find yourself swerving away from the unhealthy convenience foods that come in small convenient packets!

You know the ones I mean – the small pots of sugar laden cereal and porridge, the microwave rices full of salt and the ready made microwave meals that are usually full of nasties! No, no no!

So there you have it – 5 tips for the budget conscious weight watcher that will hopefully see your waistline shrinking without breaking the bank!
